Family Formal Tips & Tricks to Make it Fast, Easy & Fun!

Between now and wedding day there is an enormous list of to-do's that need to be done. Putting a list together of family photos you want to be taken on your wedding day is one that sounds easy at first, but can be difficult once you realize how many possibilities there are.

After photographing hundreds of weddings over the years, we've learned that how your list is created can greatly influence how smooth this part of the day goes by for everyone. Brittany will have your family list in hand and organize everyone to ensure every photo is taken before your reception.

We wanted to help simplify this process and give you a list of suggested family groupings.

Here's an example:

Couple with client #1's parents

Couple with client #1's parents and siblings

Couple with client #1's parents, siblings, and spouses/kids

Couple with client #1's grandparent(s)

Couples parents together

Client #1 with each parent

Couple with client #2's parents

Couple with client #2's parents and siblings

Couple with client #2's parents, siblings, and spouses/kids

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

We recommend photographing extended family in larger groups. The more different groupings you have, the more time will be spent taking family photos. Most people will advise you to factor in 30-45 minutes for family photos. However, we strive to get family photos done in 15-20 minutes, and everyone loves when that happens!

Another tip: if you have a myriad of larger extended family you want photos with, consider having these taken later during reception. In one of our questionnaires, we actually have a section dedicated to those group photos that you want take later in the night, but not during official family formals. Common examples of these groups are coworkers, college roomates, and other specific groups of friends. We love making these shots happen later in the night and getting to interact with more of those who are closer to you!
